The first day of Round of 16 action at
Indian Wells produced a series of tightly contested encounters as Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Arthur Fils and Learner Tien all secured their places in the quarter-finals of the
BNP Paribas Open. While some of the tournament favourites advanced as expected, several matches required decisive moments in tie-breaks or late breaks to separate the players.
Sinner maintained his strong run in the Californian desert with a straight-sets victory over Joao Fonseca, while Zverev delivered a controlled performance against Frances Tiafoe. Arthur Fils edged Felix Auger-Aliassime in a dramatic second-set tie-break, and American youngster Learner Tien produced one of the most significant wins of his career by defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a deciding-set tie-break.
Arthur Fils def. Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 7-6(9)
Arthur Fils advanced to the quarter-finals after overcoming Felix Auger-Aliassime in a match defined by strong serving and a dramatic second-set tie-break. The Frenchman controlled the opening stages of the match, breaking early in the first set and maintaining the advantage with consistent service games. Auger-Aliassime struggled to apply sustained pressure on return, allowing Fils to close the opener 6-3.
The second set proved significantly more complex. Auger-Aliassime improved his first-serve efficiency and eventually managed to break back after falling behind early in the set. With both players holding comfortably through the later stages, the contest moved into a tie-break that swung repeatedly in momentum.
Auger-Aliassime surged ahead 5-0 in the tie-break and earned multiple set points that would have forced a deciding third set. However, Fils remained composed under pressure, saving four set points through aggressive baseline play and timely first serves. After surviving a fifth set point later in the breaker, the Frenchman finally converted his second match point to seal the 11-9 tie-break.
The victory sends Fils into the Indian Wells quarter-finals once again and sets up a meeting with Alexander Zverev for a place in the last four.
