With the Abierto Mexicano Acapulco in full swing, Matteo Berrettini was one of the early casualties as he retired from his opening round match against American Tommy Paul, citing an injury.
Berrettini looked strong to start the match, but suffered an undisclosed injury in the second set that severely limited his movement, causing him to forfeit the match. Paul was handed a 4-6 5-1 (RET) victory, as his Italian opponent chose to throw in the towel to preserve his health.
The fifth seeded Berrettini was dominant in the first set, winning 14 of 17 points behind his booming first serve. He saved the only break point faced, and seemed set to run away with the match.
However, the World No.6 developed an injury in the second set, and chose to forfeit the match as he could no longer continue. Paul advances to the next round, where he will face Serbian Dusan Lajovic.
