Carlos Alcaraz will be at the disposal of Spain team captain, David Ferrer during what has been coined the Group of Death between 15-20 September in Valencia.
Albeit with the team assembled, he is unlikely to be needed for doubles. He has played doubles though of course recently with Rafael Nadal at the Olympic Games to great success.
Alcaraz who lost out at the US Open in another poor showing headed straight to train at the Ferrero Tennis Academy. He has a busy few weeks with both Davis Cup and Laver Cup set for his schedule. He was training with Roberto Bautista Agut with Pablo Carreno Busta and Pedro Martinez also involved.
In order to reach the Last 18, they have to face Australia, the Czech Republic and France in Group B. But unlike Italy, Spain will have their top name involved. A pretty surprising development given that he has often shirked Davis Cup duty.
"The Valencia group seems to be the strongest," said Davis Cup Finals tournament director Feliciano López, in the role for the second consecutive year as per Sur. "It's not very good news for Spain, but [unlike last year] I think this time they have a good chance of making it to Malaga."
"I think it's the group of death, the toughest group that could be," said Spain captain David Ferrer. "But to win the Davis Cup, you have to play against the best and try to qualify. We have a new opportunity and hope to be in the Final 8."
But instead of deciding merely to play singles, Alcaraz is also an option for doubles meaning Ferrer can pick and choose how he pleases. A good sight for him indeed.
