Jessica Pegula admits that she is finding being appreciative of her run at the
US Open to the final where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka tough to be proud of at least in the short-term.
Pegula was defeated 7-5, 7-5 and said that the congratulations have almost gone in one ear and out of the other and that she will likely be more appreciative in the cold light of day.
Of course more gutted than anything else, Pegula getting this far is both a blessing and a curse with the American reaching new heights but also missing out on a Grand Slam title to the World No.2.
"Everyone is like, `Congrats! Amazing tournament!´ I´m like, 'Eh, whatever," said Pegula. "I think maybe once I decompress a little bit, I´m sure I will be a little bit more appreciative and see all of that."
She continued that she is annoyed for the moment not at losing but the fact that she wanted to win so bad and that there were aspects of her game that she could've done better.
"For sure, I will take a lot of confidence from this - in maybe like a hour or two -- because ... I'm kind of annoyed. Not even annoyed losing the tournament; it´s more just I was looking at it at, like, I just wanted to win the match," explained Pegula. "Now there's things that are just in my head that I feel I should have done better and stuff like that. But I think that will pass in a little bit."
No doubt Pegula will take solace in this run in time. She has gone from a player who couldn't get past a Quarter-Final at a major to one who is now a Grand Slam finalist. Sabalenka was full of praise for her afterwards saying her time would come but of course that is hard to decipher after a crushing loss.
