Denis Shapovalov proved no match for Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros (French Open) with the Spaniard advancing to the next round of the event easily.
Alcaraz has been utterly spectacular at this event and it feels like he hasn't played his best tennis. This match was another example of this as it wasn't perfect but his level was so overwhelming for the Canadian that he simply couldn't do anything. The first set was another furious one as Alcaraz jumped out to an early lead and almost created another bagel.
He had set points to make it so but Shapova held on to win at least one game. Alcaraz finished it off easily in the next game 6-1. Shapovalov tried to stay with Alcaraz but like many players, he simply couldn't control the ball as well as he needed to. 5 winners and 10 unforced errors weren't that spectacular of a line.
The second set was more impressive from Shapovalov as he actually gave Alcaraz a bit of trouble. The Spaniard helped him with a few mistakes of his own but Shapovalov did play pretty well. He broke Alcaraz twice in that set which is hard to do in itself. He was aggressive but towards the set started to rack up mistakes ending up with 19 in the end which lost him the set once more.
The final set was another beatdown as Alcaraz elected to finish off the set in style and he did just that with a 6-2 finish. Not a good serving day for Shapovalov as he had zero aces and 10 double faults. Overall 25 winners and 24 UE by the Spaniard with Shapovalov posting a rather disappointing 17 winners and 39 UE line. The Spaniard moves on to face Lorenzo Musetti, a man who beat him the last time they played on clay.
