Andrey Rublev found himself losing control of a match against Lorenzo Sonego at Roland Garros (French Open) which saw him exit the event in the 3rd round.
Rublev was playing fairly well at the event and was doing well in this match as well but ultimately he was beaten by Lorenzo Sonego who quite literally wrestled control of the match from him. After the match, Rublev was visibly disappointed:
“Not much to say I think. The way that I was playing today, I deserve to lose. This time I think it will be faster for me [to get over it]. I think it's more about my level; it's not good enough now. It's more important for me to go back and improve the level of my game. I don’t know... I have many, many thoughts. In the fourth set I think we were equal. Just a few points were not on my side. In the fifth set, he played really well. He started to hit full power. He started to play really well but still I had some opportunities.”
Turning attention to the grass
Rublev did find a positive in all of that. He will now have enough time to properly prepare for the grass season. It's a part of the calendar which generally gives him problems so having all this extra time to improve should be a blessing fo the Russinan. He would have likely prefered to remain a bit longer on clay though:
“One positive thing I will have now is the two-and-a-half weeks to prepare well for the grass. I still need to improve a lot of things to be able to play more consistent. But also, since Monte-Carlo, I was playing non-stop. We didn't really have much time. We only had one or two weeks of good practices.”
