Journalist German R. Abril has revealed that Spain’s young
tennis star Carlos Alcaraz is not injured despite withdrawing from the upcoming
Barcelona Open. The 20-year-old is often regarded as one of the most highly-rated
players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category along with
Italy’s Jannik Sinner.
On Monday, it was reported that Alcaraz has been ruled out
of the upcoming Barcelona Open after failing to recover completely from a forearm
injury sustained just before the start of the Monte-Carlo Masters. It was because
of this reason, that the current world number three ended up missing out on the recently
concluded ATP 1000 event in Monaco.
Journalist R. Abril, in a post on social media platform X, previously
known as Twitter, revealed the real reason behind why Alcaraz decided not to
take part in the mega-event. “It is important to note: Carlos Alcaraz is NOT
injured. This was confirmed yesterday by medical tests,” he wrote. “The problem
is that he doesn’t have a good feeling when hitting hard with his forehand. It
is important that you feel confident again when hitting the drive.”
The news will be a major setback for Alcaraz as he was set
to defend his title in Barcelona and therefore, he will miss out on important
rating points in the ATP rankings. Last year, he won the title after beating Greece’s
Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
