The 2024
BMW Munich Open will be an ATP 250 tournament continuing the clay swing and
taking place between April 15th and April 21st, 2024. The draw will feature
prominent players such as local favorite
Alexander Zverev (No. 5), 2-times
champion
Holger Rune (No. 7), and
Taylor Fritz (No. 13).
The
tournament will distribute over $579,000 in prizes, with other players poised
to make an impact, including local talents
Jan-Lennard Struff (No. 25) and
Dominik Koepfer (No. 54), as well as young contenders
Jack Draper (No. 39) and
Felix Auger-Aliassime (No. 35).
Will there
be a new local champion in Munich?
The last
two editions of the tournament ended with titles for Holger Rune, as he
defeated
Botic van de Zandschulp in both 2022 and 2023. The last time a German
player reached the final was in 2021 when Struff fell to
Nikoloz Basilashvili
in straight sets.
Holger Rune is the 2-times defending champion
The last
local champion was Sascha Zverev in 2017 and 2018. This year, he will be the
top favorite alongside Rune, both vying for their third crown in Munich, a feat
previously achieved only by
Philipp Kohlschreiber (2007, 2012, 2016).
Zverev
receives a bye in the first round and awaits the winner of the match between
Jurij Rodionov and Alexander Vukic. As for Rune, he awaits the winner of the
South American clash between Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Daniel Elahi Galan.
The draw
will also provide opportunities for players looking to regain their top form
and perhaps surprise during the week. This includes former US Open champion
Dominic Thiem, who received a wild card and will debut against a qualifier.
Additionally, the 2019 champion Cristian Garin, who is currently below his peak
level but considers Munich one of his favorite tournaments, will also be in the
mix.
