Legendary Spaniard Rafael Nadal hung up his racket at the 2024 Davis Cup in front of his home crowd in Malaga, and compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, who played doubles alongside the 22-time Grand Slam champion at the event, recently revealed why he has not gotten in touch with his idol since the retirement ceremony.
The 14-time Roland Garros champion ended his career after entertaining fans for close to two decades on tour. The former World No.1 had epic battles with fellow rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, often putting his body on the line while displaying his indomitable spirit. However, the 38-year old was forced to retire last year, following a lengthy bout with several injuries.
Although Nadal and Alcaraz teamed up to play doubles at the 2024 Olympic Games and the Davis Cup, the duo are not particularly close friends. The younger Alcaraz has expressed his admiration for Nadal on numerous occasions, often stating the legendary Spaniard was his idol growing up. However, Alcaraz admitted to not having spoken to Nadal since the retirement ceremony at the Davis Cup last year.
"Rafa and I have a very good relationship, but I haven't spoken to him again after his withdrawal from the Davis Cup," admitted Alcaraz in an interview prior to his first match in Doha. "I think he deserves to be at peace with his family and enjoy the things he couldn't when he was playing.
"For me, he has been and still is a great role model. I saw that he congratulated me on social media, but I haven't had the chance to talk to him yet. I'm sure the time will come to do so."
The World No.3 will face Italian Luca Nardi in the round of 16 at the ongoing Qatar Open.
