The third round match at
Roland Garros 2024 for Carlos
Alcaraz pitted the player from Murcia against
Sebastian Korda. The world number
3 wanted to reach the round of 16, and managed to defeat the American without
many complications, except for a second set that went to a tie break. The
result was 4-6, 6(5)-7 and 3-6.
FIRST SET
In the first set, Alcaraz started the match strongly by
breaking Korda's serve and taking a 0-1 lead. However, the American would react
quickly and, with a break, returned the tie to the scoreboard. After this crazy
start, there was not going to be any more break opportunities until almost the
end of the set.
At 4-4, Carlitos was 30-40 on Korda's serve, and got a crucial
break to serve with the possibility of winning the first set. In the end, the
Spaniard got it, and put the 4-6 with a game in white.
SECOND SET
In the
second set, Sebastian Korda started by winning his first serve. But his
confidence with his serve was not going to last long. At the first break ball
with 1-1, Alcaraz managed to break Korda's serve to take a 1-2 lead, and confirmed
the break with a blank game that left him 1-3 up. However, Korda managed to
react after the 2-3, and with a break put equality again in the Philippe
Chatrier's scoreboard. 3-3.
Then,
Carlos Alcaraz would have three break points to get back in front, but
Sebastian Korda saved all of them, and got the 4-3. From that moment, there
would not be a single break opportunity until the end of the set, and therefore
the two players went to the tie break. In the tiebreak, the first four points
were mini breaks. At 4-4, Korda lost his serve. Alcaraz had a first set point
with his serve at 4-6, but could not materialize it. However, he only delayed
his victory in the second set, as with a mini break he closed the tie break by
5-7 to put himself 0-2 in sets.
Alcaraz now has an incredible 48-10 (83%) record in Grand Slams.
THIRD SET
In the
third set, Alcaraz would have his first break opportunities with 0-1 up.
However, Korda saved the two break balls of the Spaniard, 1-1. Carlitos was
playing a very serious tennis. After a game in white that put him 1-2 up, the
Spaniard broke with his first break point. Then, he got another game in white
that left the score 1-4 in his favor, and with a very touched Sebastian Korda.
From this
point on, Alcaraz only had to keep the advantage until the end to win the
match. So it was to be and, closing the third and final set by 3-6, Carlitos
got into the round of 16 at Roland Garros, where he will face the winner of the
match between
Ben Shelton and
Felix Auger-Aliassime.
