Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz has revealed that his younger brother
is a big fan of Austria’s
Dominic Thiem. The 21-year-old is already regarded as
one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles
category, along with the likes of Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Serbia’s Novak
Djokovic.
Despite Alcaraz’s on-court success, which makes him one of the
hottest properties in men’s tennis, his younger brother Jamie remains a big of
Thiem. The 31-year-old has recently announced retirement from professional tennis
after struggling with fitness concerns in the recent past.
Alcaraz has been recently quoted in a report by English
media outlet Daily Express where he stated that his brother remains a big fan
of the Austrian and also revealed that he does not even want to play with his
racket. "My little brother who play tennis, he’s a huge fan of Dominic Thiem,” said
Alcaraz. “He used to play with his racket not mine so, he was always like
watching Dominic. I hear a lot of things from my little brother, ‘I wanted to
play like Dominic Thiem, I wanted to play like him with same racket, same
style.’ So my family, we have really high admiration for Dominic Thiem.”
Thiem will finish his career after winning one Grand Slam.
He lifted the 2020 US Open after beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the
final in a five-set thriller with a score of 2–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6. The
31-year-old, who was once regarded as the perfect heir to the ageing ‘Big Three’
suffered a serious wrist injury which turned his career upside down. He never
managed to return to his very best and earlier this year, he announced that he
will retire from professional tennis after participating in the Vienna Open on
his home soil. He will play his tournament opener against Italy’s Luciano Darderi
on Tuesday.
