It was a rather lacklustre day of tennis at the Australian Open not because the quality of play wasn't good but because there was a lot less tennis played. A record-breaking day 2 spoiled many tennis fans which is why this day felt a bit empty. Nonetheless, matches were played so let's recap the most interesting one.
Marin Cilic has been player who has struggled in slams ever since he won one a few years. Some of it has to do with poor play and some with injury. After a solid 1st round victory he faced Benoit Paire of France. It was a textbook thriller going back and forth. Marin won the 1st set 6-2. Benoit responded furiously winning the next two 7-6(6) 6-3., 3, yet it was the Croatian who prevailed in the end. He won the 4th set 6-1 and the last one with 7-6(3).
Another player who has struggled to get back to his glory days in Milos Raonic. It's been a long time since he had a major result so many wondered whether he could do some damage at the Australian Open. He started off very not dropping a set in the 1st round and he did it again in the 2nd round. His opponent was Garin of Chile, a player who's not so fond of the hardcourt. Milos played well from the start and secured an easy 6-3 6-4 6-2 victory.
Another thriller that happened late in the evening hours was between Berrettini and Sangren. The American is no stranger to upsets and he usually plays his best tennis in Melbourne. That was again the case as he has beaten the Italian in a 3,5 hours flight which took 5 sets to be completed. The final result was 7-6(7) 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-4.
