Novak Djokovic will not add the third Monte-Carlo Masters title needed for his collection to complete the set as Casper Ruud paid heed to that by sealing a win over a top three player for the first time in his life.
Ruud sealed an epic 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win over Djokovic to reach the final where he will face off against Stefanos Tsitsipas tomorrow. He had never beaten Djokovic in his life losing five times including in the final of Roland Garros. But he has now avenged it winning in three sets and handing another crushing defeat to Djokovic.
Ruud sealed an early break to open the first set. He eased himself into the match and went 4-1 up. Djokovic pulled back a break, but wasn't enough to pull back the set. The second set was a return to form for Djokovic who took an early break and shifted it in his favour. Ruud started to unravel and it seemed likely that he would go on to lose the match with a 6-1 set score in favour of Djokovic. But Ruud's comeback was magnificent.
He went 3-0 up in the deciding set remaining focused to the task at hand. He hit six winners and no unforced errors in those games unlike Djokovic who had four and three respectively. Ruud couldn't maintain it fully, but he regained it in the tenth game at a pivotal moment as Djokovic went on to lose from there.
