While the more experienced of the Croatian duo played only the third round at the 2020 US Open, his younger countryman, Borna Coric was coming in a good form as he reached the quarterfinals in Flushing Meadows. However, conditions in Rome are much different but they both fought successfully through the first round.
Both matches started and finished at almost an identical time, but it was Cilic who walked first on the court in his match against Alexander Bublik. The Croat then lost the first set in an hour and 7 minutes 6-7(4). However, he showed his experience against the young Kazakh and turned the match around to win it 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4.
The match between Borna Coric and Christian Garin finished already after two sets, however it was played also for 2 hours as both showed a really spectacular match. Although it was very close all the time and both players managed to break the service of the other one, it was Coric who prevailed and won the match 6-4, 6-4.
