Dan Evans did the unthinkable in beating Novak Djokovic in R3 of the Monte-Carlo Masters in straight sets.
It was a truly stunning display from Evans who defeated Djokovic in straight sets to move on to the Monte-Carlo Masters quarterfinal. Djokovic did not play his best tennis today but Evans secured the biggest win of his career with some clever play. A bit over two hours was enough for Evans to down Djokovic 6-4 7-5.
Djokovic seemed off from the start of the match where he found himself down 1-3 after the first four games. He was not hitting his shot and Evans was playing very patientely waiting for mistakes from Djokovic. After finding some rhythm the Serbian was able to pull it back and make it 4-4 but Evans ultimaltey came out on top 6-4.
Djokovic was rushing in this match and he committed too many errors, almost twice as much as Evans. He started off better in the 2nd set taking an early 3-1 lead and it seemed like the reigning world number one was going to cruise but Evans pulled it back. He was mixing up his game very well centred around his backhand slice which frustrated Djokovic.
Novak tried several approaches but the consistency and level simply were not there today. At 5-5, Evans was able to carve out a double break point and after using the 2nd he proceeded to end the match with a strong service game. A very disappointing result for Novak who simply did not play good enough today.
