The Russian started his run this season in Sofia, where he earned his first trophy. Then he struggled a bit, when he lost 5 matches in a row, but now, in St Petersburg, he reached his 5th final in a row. As he later explained after his first win in Cincinnati he has decided not to show any emotions.
"It’s an amazing feeling,” said Medvedev. “I decided that after Cincinnati, my style is going to be to try not to show any emotions when I win. I find it funny for myself… for my own reasons, and that’s what I did today, but I was extremely happy and it was tough to hide my emotions.”
“After the match, you could see how happy I was. Especially beating Borna, who is an amazing player," said Medvedev. "I lost three times to him last year in a row. It was an amazing final and an amazing week. Many people didn’t believe in me this week… I came here to win and I did it.”
Borna Coric, who was the finalist in Russia, admited that his opponent was the better player in the final.
“He was the much better player on the court. He did all the aspects better than me. I tried pretty much everything, all the tactics, all that I could think of. It didn't work. He had answers to every question of mine,” Coric said.
