Daniil Medvedev ensures No. 1 stay until the end of US Open

Daniil Medvedev entered the North American hard court season with some doubts over whether he'll keep his number one spot but he will.

The Russian opted to play in Los Cabos and he was able to secure the final there with a chance to win the trophy later tonight. With those points Medvedev ensured himself to stay as world number one until at least the US Open passes giving himself a couple of more weeks at the top of tennis. The greatest help in that is the injury of Zverev which prevents him from playing.

The German won Cincinnati last year so those points will drop soon and ensure that he can't overtake Medvedev. There is a chance the Russian loses his number one ranking after the US Open because he is the defending champion.

After the win, Medvedev said:

"It's great (to reach the final). I came to Mexico to see where my level of play is on hardcourts. Two months have passed since my last tournament; there are good players, great level. I am in great shape for the next tournament, and I feel ready to fight for the title tomorrow."
