Former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev has received a wild card for the Open 13 Provence, also known as the Marseille Open. The 28-year-old Russian decided to add a tournament to his schedule after a poor start to the season, which saw him suffer a surprising second-round exit at the Australian Open.

Medvedev experienced a significant ranking drop, as he was defending runner-up points from last year, causing him to fall to world No. 7. With Alex de Minaur and Tommy Paul closing in, he faces the risk of slipping further down the rankings.

The former world No. 1 had originally planned to head straight to the Middle East Swing after competing in Rotterdam, with Doha and Dubai on his schedule, followed by a week off in February. However, this change means Medvedev will now play four tournaments in February, a clear attempt to regain momentum after his early Melbourne exit—especially considering he had reached the final in three of the past four editions.

With key points to defend in the coming months—semifinals in Dubai, a final in Indian Wells, and semifinals in Miami Open—Medvedev's schedule adjustment signals an effort to strengthen his ranking ahead of the crucial Sunshine Double.

Only two other top-20 players have chosen to compete in four tournaments in February before the demanding Indian Wells and Miami Open stretch: Holger Rune (No. 14) and Arthur Fils (No. 19), both of whom are accustomed to playing multiple events after the Australian Open.

Medvedev will be the top seed in Marseille, where the draw will also feature players like Ugo Humbert, Arthur Fils, Karen Khachanov, Hubert Hurkacz, and Sebastian Korda.
