Novak Djokovic showed his class lauding the talents of Nishesh Basavareddy after he took down the American in four sets to open up his Australian Open campaign on Monday morning.

Djokovic prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in the end and now moves through to face Jaime Faria. He was a bit flummoxed when he was asked about his opponent having him as a WhatsApp profile picture but opened up on his thoughts on the young American.

“He was a better player for a set and a half. He deserved every bit of applause he got when he left the court. To be honest I’ve never seen him play up until 3 or 4 days ago. I didn’t know much about him," said Djokovic.

"These matchups are always tricky when you play someone with nothing to lose. First match ever for him in a slam. He pleasantly surprised me with all of his shots and fighting spirit towards the end. I wish him all the best for the rest of his career”

But it was a flummoxing test as he also had Andy Murray in his corner for the first time. From rival for so many years to coach, Murray was in the on court pods and he said himself that he is finding it strange to have him on his side for once.

“It was a bit of a strange experience to have him court side in my box. We played for over 20 years against each other at the highest level. Great to have him on the same side of the net. He gave me great advice mid match. It’s good we have an opportunity now to have allowed coaching on the same side. It’s a completely different angle when you’re watching from the side. He’s been doing really well. It’s been an enjoyable experience. Hopefully we don’t stop here.”
