The
Roland Garros postponement has been somewhat of a thing of controversy and the two best-ranked players had a very different reaction to it.
The Roland Garros has been officially postponed by a week after speculations that it would. For a brief moment, there were talks about postponement till August but that did not happen. Asked about the postponement Medvedev said:
“I’m a bit surprised, because if we talk about rules, about the French Open, not the French Open itself, but the country and the government, what does it change if we do it a week later? We’re talking about COVID here. I’m not sure it will change anything.
The Russian player who is usually soft-spoken but also unafraid to voice his opinion concluded with:
“I must say it’s a bit ridiculous. But not on the part of the French Federation or the government, it’s just the general situation."
World number one
Novak Djokovic was a bit more reserved in his opinion and more accepting of the shift. When asked about it he gave a long and thoughtful answer:
“As I understood, one of the main reasons is because there might be a loosening of the restrictions so that the crowd allowance percentage will grow. Hopefully, that will happen. It’s tough to say what is right, what is wrong. From Grand Slam, from their perspective, it was obviously the right call because they’re thinking about themselves."
Djokovic further continued:
“Then the ATP Tour, their tournaments are going to suffer because of that. It’s hard to say what is right, what is wrong.”
