Novak Djokovic defeated two opponents on Saturday setting up the Rome Masters final against Rafael Nadal.
It was a very exhausting day for Novak Djokovic who first defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 4-6 7-5 7-5 and then Lorenzo Sonego 6-3 6-7(5) 6-2 to move to the Rome Masters final. Going to three against Sonego was not ideal for Djokovic who would have liked to keep that match short in order to preserve energy for Nadal.
After the match the Serbian blamed himself for that while also praising Sonego and his play:
"I have only myself to blame for not closing the match in two sets. At the end of the day, he is showing why he reached his first [ATP Masters 1000] semi-finals. He's a quality player. [It is] not easy to play against him. Obviously, he had the crowd behind him. It was an electric atmosphere out there on the court."
The match against Nadal will be the 9th time they play at the Foro Italico (Nadal leads 5-3). The duo dominated this event winning 14 of the past 16 editions. For Djokovic, it's the toughest match possible especially with the amount of tennis he played. On that he said:
"I don't have much time [to recover], I played a lot of tennis. Hopefully I'll have fresh legs because that's what I definitely will need. It's necessary in order to have a chance against Rafa."
Even though the odds are not in his favour considering the circumstances Djokovic promised to give it his all noting that Nadal played quite a bit of tennis as well:
"He also had some tough matches, obviously myself, with rain delays and everything that has happened today. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be fresh and I'll give it all."
The match is set to start at 17:00 CET and you can follow it on our live scores page here.
