2021 ATP & WTA Internazionali BNL d'Italia Rome Sunday's Schedule of Play with Djokovic vs Nadal

The 2021 Internazionali BNL d'Italia Rome is a premier event held simultaneously for the ATP and WTA and is headlined by the best in Djokovic, Williams, Nadal and Barty.

The Internazionali BNL d'Italia is coming to a close with only the two finals left to play. It was a stunning 78th edition of the Rome Masters and in the ATP final, we will see Novak Djokovic take on Rafael Nadal. In the WTA final, we will see Iga Swiatek take on Karolina Pliskova. The men's final is one that many hoped to see. It's Novak Djokovic vs Rafael Nadal at a venue where Djokovic already defeated Nadal before. It will be a spectacular final between two players who know each other well. Both produced sensational matches at this event with Djokovic facing much tougher opposition.

The Serbian also spent considerably more time on the court in the past few days playing two matches on Saturday. He spent over 4 hours on the court compared to Nadal who was done in 1,5 hours. That might prove key in the match but it's not the only thing. Djokovic has played best against Nadal on the clay courts of Rome so his fondness of the venue and city might also boost him.

Having rested a week earlier might also benefit him. If Nadal wins he will tie Djokokovic for most Masters wins of all time (36) so there will be plenty of motivation. Either way, a great match should be on the table. The match starts at 17:00 CET.

In the WTA final, we will see a player who will be playing her first Masters final (Iga Swiatek) and a player who played the final last year (Karolina Pliskova). Pliskova will be hoping to improve on her performance from last year when she lost to Halep against a player who enjoys clay like very few do.

It was a very emotional week for Swiatek who did not cruise to this final unlike the Roland Garros last year. She faced stiff competition and had to dig deep in order to reach the final. However, she played better as time went on and bulldozed her way past Svitolina and Gauff.

Playing those matches in one day might come back to haunt her against Pliskova who is more rested. The Czech also had her struggles playing two close matches. She clearly enjoys playing in Rome having reached the final two years in a row. The conditions favour Swiatek more but it will come down to details.

If Iga has her day she could cruise to the title easily but if Pliskova plays the way she can and serves well she might win as well. It should be exciting.

The Internazionali BNL d'Italia continues on Saturday with a very hybrid schedule that will largely depend on the weather. Rain played a major factor on Friday interrupting matches several times. The times of the matches are not yet clear but Programme should start at 11:00 CET.

Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas will need to finish their match that was interrupted by the rain with Tsitsipas winning the opening set and leading 2-1 in the 2nd set. At the same time, Rublev will take on Sonego in the 2nd quarterfinal. If the weather obliges we should see the first semifinal between Nadal and Opelka at 13:00 CET with the 2nd semifinal to be played not before 18:30.

On the WTA side of things, we will see two early matches in the morning. One match is a semifinal and in that match, Pliskova will take on Martic for a place in the final. Both of them are having strong events with Pliskova being a finalist in 2020 as well. The 2nd match will be the final quarterfinal between Svitolina and Swiatek.

Whoever wins that match will take on Coco Gauff in the 2nd semifinal later in the day after sufficient rest. The schedule will remain flexible and dependent on the weather with the forecast looking promising and drier than today. We will keep you updated as the day progresses.

The Internazionali BNL d'Italia Rome is down to its last 8 on both sides of the event. The programme as always will start at 10:00 CET with two surprise players in the quarterfinal. Delbonis will take on Opelka with a great chance for both to reach the semifinal. After them, we will see another great matchup between Zverev and Nadal which is a rematch they played not even a week ago.

Another banger will follow as Djokovic takes on Tsitsipas for a place in the Rome Master's semifinal. The final match of the day will feature Andrey Rublev and either Dominic Thiem or Lorenzo Sonego with an evening start at 19:00 CET.

On the WTA side of things, we will start with Martic taking on Pegula early in the morning at 10:00 CET. Pegula has been one of the more consistent players on the tour this year a semifinal berth is right there for the taking. 2020 Finalist Pliskova will take on Ostapenko in another very interesting matchup.

The match of the day will be between Ashleigh Barty and Coco Gauff in a clash of the current world number one and potentially the future number one. Barty has been red hot this season while Gauff has been truly astonishing in Rome. The final match of the day will feature Iga Swiatek taking on Ashleigh Barty.

Play, as always, will start at 10:00 CET and the world number one Djokovic will kick us off against Davidovich Fokina. Karatsev will take on Opelka while a banger will be played later between Berrettini and Tsitsipas. Auger-Aliassime will take on Delbonis while Nadal will play Shapovalov. The final two matches of the day will be between Bautista Agut and Rublev and Thiem and Sonego.

On the WTA side of things, Pegula will get us underway against Alexandrova at 10:00 with Gauff and Sabalenka playing at the same time. Barty will step out to take on Kudermetova while Swiatek will take on Krejcikova. Podoroska will play against Petra Martic, while Pliskova will take on Zvonareva. Angelique Kerber will try her luck against Ostapenko with the programme being closed by Muguruza and Svitolina.

The Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Wednesday will have a packed day both on the ATP and WTA side of the event. Play will start at 10:00 CET with Thiem taking on Fucsovics. There will be plenty of interesting matches such as Bautista-Agut - Garin, Berrettini - Millman, Cilic - Tsitsipas and many more. 

Medvedev will take on Karatsev after their match was postponed due to rain while Nadal will play Jannik Sinner in a spectacular matchup. Rublev will take on Struff while Madrid Open champion will take on Dellien.

On the WTA side of things, there will be a plethora of matches as well. Some of them are: Svitolina vs Anisimova, Barty vs Shvedova, Kenin vs Krejcikova, Keys vs Swiatek and many more. Garbine Muguruza will play again taking on Bernard Pera. Petra Kvitova will take on Vera Zvonareva while Maria Sakkari will play Coco Gauff.

Naomi Osaka will also make an appearance taking on Pegula while Serena Williams will have a tough task against French Open semifinalist Podoroska. Madrid Open champion Sabalenka will play against the always tricky Sara Sorribes Tormo.

The Internazionali BNL d'Italia Rome continues on Tuesday with a packed schedule of play consisting of many great ATP and WTA matches. The programme will start at 10:00 CET with a clash between Dimitrov and Davidovich Fokina. Another great one at that time will be between Rublev and Struff. Madrid Open finalist Berrettini will take on Basilasvhili while Novak Djokovic will play Fritz at 13:00 CET.

At the same time we will Nishikori take on Carreno Busta while Auger-Aliassime will play Schwartzman. The final ATP match of the day will be a banger between Medvedev and Karatsev.

On the WTA side of the things, play will also start at 10:00 CET as Bencic takes on Mladenovic. Sloane Stephens will take on Keys while Kudermetova will play newly crowned Doubles #1 Mertens. Garbine Muguruza makes a comeback facing off against Pavlyuchenkova.

Play will start quite early at 10:00 CET with some interesting matches such as Evans vs Fritz. Karatsev will take on Kecmanovic while a spectacular match between Fognini and Nishikori will also happen.

The Internazionali BNL d'Italia Rome officially starts on Sunday, May 9th with a light schedule to lead us into the event where the bulk of the action will start tomorrow. We have four matches on the schedule with play commencing at 11:00 CET. Felix Auger-Aliassime will look to finally start winning on clay against the tricky Krajinovic.

Another Serbian in Djere will play Carreno-Busta who had a terrible display in Madrid. David Goffin will take on Italian Salvatore Caruso in a tricky matchup for the Belgian who does play solid clay tennis. The final match of the day will be between veteran Richard Gasquet who will take on big-serving Reilly Opelka.
