Novak Djokovic came close to completing the calendar grand slam at the US Open but ultimately failed losing to Daniil Medvedev in the final.
It was a devastating loss by Djokovic who played a very bad match from start to finish getting easily beaten by Medvedev. It was one of the most important matches in his career yet the Serbian could not muster a high enough level to win the match. It marked a continuation of a negative trend for the Serbian at the US Open.
Djokovic won the event three times in his career (2011, 2015 and 2018) however he has lost many more. His 2021 US Open final loss was the 6th time the Serbian lost the final of the US Open. It's the highest mark for any player at the US Open but not only the US Open, but all the Grand Slams combined.
His losses came against Wawrinka in 2016, Nadal in 2010 and 2013, Andy Murray in 2012, Roger Federer in 2007 and 2009 and Medvedev in 2021. It's an unfortunate thing for Djokovic who has had a lot of success at the US Open, just never in the final match where he often faced a very hostile crowd.
It's the main reason why he teared up during the Medvedev final when the crowd was fully behind him. After the loss he said that he was the luckies man alive indicating that the support means to him as much as winning the trophy.
