Commenting on the final, Theim noticed a clear tension within Novak Djokovic that was visible both in his play and demeanour on the court. On the match, Thiem said:
“Medvedev didn’t care about all that. He played sensationally from the beginning to the end, didn’t do anything stupid the whole match and, on top of that, he shot winners right and left. In addition, he served really well against the best return player."
Thiem also noted that Medvedev deserved to win as he played a great match on top of a great event:
"He completely deserved to win it. With the early break in the first set, he immediately got the momentum on his side and then played at a consistently really, really high level.”
Asked what he thought about Novak Djokovic and his display, Thiem said:
“On the other hand, you could see the tension Novak Djokovic was under – especially at the last exchange, where he was in tears."
It was a bittersweet ending for Djokovic who failed to create history but still gained a lot of respect from everyone including the New York crowd which seldom supported him early.
