Neither Novak Djokovic nor Dominic Thiem has played at the two North American Masters events in Toronto and Cincinnati. Thiem was prevented by a wrist injury that he reinjured once more forcing him to miss the rest of the 2021 season. Thiem will not be able to defend his US Open title won last year.
However he expressed belief that Novak Djokovic will be the player to win it:
“I think Djokovic will do it. Because of the Grand Slam – he has such an incredible will and because it is a chance of the century to win the Grand Slam. I think he won’t miss the chance.”
For Dominic, the inability to play for the rest of the season is something that deeply hurts. Asked what hurts the most about missing the rest of the season Thiem picked something ahead of the US Open:
“It all hurts. The Davis Cup hurts the most, it is perhaps the only time for such a great home Davis Cup. Of course missing Vienna is bitter, but I will definitely play that a few more times. But how often such a home Davis Cup will be against Serbia and Germany – maybe never again.”
