Serbia’s tennis star
Novak Djokovic has an outstanding
record while playing in the Grand Slams.
The 36-year-old defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the
final of the
US Open 2023 on Sunday in straight sets with a score of 6-3,
7-6(5), 6-3.
It was Djokovic’s 24th Grand Slam title victory
and with that, he has now won exactly one-third of the major events he has
taken part in.
That victory once again stamped the current world number one’s
authority on top of the ladder in the ATP rankings.
It was earlier expected that the Belgrade-born has already passed
his prime but he managed to win three out of the four major titles in 2023.
His only defeat in a Grand Slam this year was in the final
of Wimbledon where he lost to Spain’s young tennis star Carlos Alcaraz in a
five-set thriller with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
Djokovic is often termed as the greatest player in the
history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era, having won the most number of
Grand Slams.
His most successful competition is the Australian Open where
he has lifted the title many as 10 times — in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015,
2016, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023.
His first victory in a major tournament came in 2008 in Melbourne
where he defeated France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final with a score of 4–6,
6–4, 6–3, 7–6.
