Dominic Thiem will play in a final again as the Austrian defeated native
Hugo Gaston 6-2 7-5 to book the Rennes challenger final.
Thiem started his indoor season on the challenger Tour hoping to get a head start and he's looked rather good this week. A few minor hiccups in a couple of matches but the Austrian showed high confidence in his indoor game. After all, he has played in the ATP Finals final before so he can be very good in these conditions.
Gaston is a player that bested him on clay the last time they played and it was a painful 5-set loss for Thiem as it happened at Roland Garros. This time around he was ready for the tricks of Gaston and he jumped out to an early lead to take the set 6-2.
The second was a bit more competitive as Gaston was able to make it more interesting. Thiem did get an early break but Gaston broke back and saved a couple of break points later to keep himself in the match. Still, Thiem was able to secure another late break to take the match. A very solid win for Thiem who will play in his first final since the injury tomorrow, even if it's only a challenger final.
