Andy Murray returned to the courts today and played a great match defeating Benoit Paire 6-3 6-2 at the cinch Championships in Queen's Club.
It was a very emotional return to tennis for Andy Murray who played on the grass of Queen's Club where he lifted 5 trophies in his career. Playing in front of the native British crowd also meant a lot to Andy as support was immense throughout the match. Murray could not hide his emotions and they overcame him as tears were very visible as he spoke after the match.
“I’m always sort of telling myself, and maybe it’s not the best mindset, but each match could be my last one, you know, that I play now. I want to make the most of every match that I play and each tournament that I get the chance to compete in."
Murray did fairly well against an engaged Paire which hasn't been the case that many times this year. A few rallies reminded fans of Murray of old especially a forehand passing shot that got the crowd to their feet.
“I just really want to play. Like I said, I have not really had the opportunity to do that the last few years. You know, when I have, it’s been pretty fleeting. This was the first singles match I got to play on grass in three years, so I was just happy to be out there playing, doing well."
Murray was happy to be back on grass especially after not playing on the surface for three years. He said:
“I felt pretty calm on the court. Grass is a very natural surface for me. It’s one I feel very comfortable on. Once I got out there, I actually felt good."
Murray will cherish the 2nd round matchup against Matteo Berrettini who is a top 10 player in the world. It's what Murray has craved for some time, to compete with the best again.
