Murray RESILIENCE 🥵 Two-time champion @andy_murray battles past Berrettini and will now face the No. 29 seed Etcheverry in the second round ⏩ #MiamiOpen
Andy Murray reaches 30 wins at the Miami Open after defeating Matteo Berrettini 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Miami Open. The Italian came in with good sensations after reaching the final of the Phoenix Challenger last week (defeat against Nuno Borges), but couldn't overcome the 3-times Grand Slam champion.
The last time Berrettini and Murray faced each other was at the 2023 Australian Open in one of the most epic matches of the season, where Murray emerged victorious after nearly 5 hours, and this time they delivered another electrifying duel.
The first set leaned in favor of Berrettini, who was almost unbeatable with a 78% first serve, winning 76% of them, compared to Murray's 65% and 60%, respectively. The Italian seized the advantage on his first break point and didn't give his opponent any chances on serve. With the score 4-2 in favor of Berrettini, the former world No. 1 had 2 break points in his favor but couldn't capitalize on them, and Berrettini eventually sealed the set 6-4 in 50 minutes.
Murray, the champion in 2009 and 2013 in Miami, played flawlessly with his service in the second set and was much more resilient on the return. The former world No. 1 won 83% of the points on his serve and didn't face any break points against him. In the sixth game, with Murray leading 3-2, he secured a hard-fought game on his third break point. It was the only one he needed to claim the set and send it to a decider.
The culmination of the match began with Berrettini serving, but he couldn't hold it in an 18-point game that ultimately ended in Murray's favor with the break. The Briton held onto the lead, and both players showed signs of physical fatigue with over two hours of play and several lengthy exchanges.
They both saved several break points, but ultimately it was Murray who secured his 30th Miami Open triumph with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory in a marathon duel lasting two hours and 45 minutes. In the second round, he will face the 29th seed Tomas Etcheverry, who received a bye in the first round.
