Argentinian
Tomás Martín Etcheverry defeated Scottish
Andy Murray today with a score of
6-7(5), 6-3, and 6-2, advancing to the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 tennis
tournament in Basel, Switzerland.
The
32nd-ranked Argentinian overcame the challenge posed by the 40th-ranked
Scottish player, Andy Murray, in an intense match that lasted 3 hours and 9
minutes.
With this
victory, Etcheverry leveled their head-to-head record, as Murray had won their
only previous encounter back in March of this year at the Indian Wells Masters
1000 in the United States.
The match
began favorably for the Argentinian. With great determination and precise
shots, Etcheverry broke Murray's serve early, putting pressure on the Scottish
player. In his characteristic style, Murray began to neutralize the situation
with composure, eventually taking the set to a tiebreak, which he won 7-5.
Far from
feeling overwhelmed by conceding the initial set, Etcheverry regained his
composure and quickly took a 4-1 lead. Although he faced challenges on his
serve and saved five break points, he ultimately secured the set, forcing the
match into a decisive third set.
In the
final set, it was once again the Argentinian who took control from the
beginning, breaking Murray's serve in the opening game and holding his own
serve immediately afterward. This trend continued throughout the match, leading
to Etcheverry's significant victory against the former world No. 1. He now
awaits the winner between Holger Rune and his compatriot Sebastián Báez in the
next round.
A curious
fact is that this encounter brought together the third-best racket from
Argentina and Great Britain. In the rankings, Etcheverry is ranked just behind
Francisco Cerúndolo (21st) and Sebastián Báez (29th), while Murray is ranked
below his fellow countrymen Cameron Norrie (18th) and Daniel Evans (35th).
With this
victory, Etcheverry climbs to world No. 30 in the live rankings, which, if
confirmed, would be the highest ranking of his career.
