Team Europe are Laver Cup champions once again!
Carlos Alcaraz had the difficult task of playing the decisive match in the 2024 Laver Cup. He faced Taylor Fritz, the recent US Open finalist, with the obligation to win to secure the tournament for his team. The Murcian showed he was back to his best level, leaving the American with nothing, delivering a resounding 6-2, 7-5 victory.
The match started evenly, with each player holding serve. However, Alcaraz quickly raised his game and took a 5-1 lead, displaying phenomenal tennis and making his opponent, the world No. 7, look like a junior player. Fritz managed to hold his serve once, but Carlitos sealed the set with a love service game, 6-2.
The second set began similarly to the first, with each player holding serve and an early break from Alcaraz. This time, the four-time Grand Slam champion struggled more with his serve but handled the pressure brilliantly and maintained his break lead. From there, he took control of the match and came close to a double break at 4-2.
However, Fritz managed to save himself, and from that moment, everything changed. The American won three consecutive games, breathing new life into a match that seemed lost. He came within two points of taking the set, but Carlitos woke up just in time, and, as often happens when he's given a second chance, he broke Fritz’s serve and sealed the match on his second opportunity.
In this Laver Cup, Alcaraz once again showed that when he enjoys himself on the court, has fun, and feels happy, he is nearly unbeatable. Under these conditions, he can easily be considered the best player in the world.
