Roger Federer overcame a very brave Dominik Koepfer en route to week 2 of Roland Garros.

It was a great match that finished way after midnight (local time) and it saw Federer defeat Koepfer 7-6(5) 6-7(3) 7-6(4) 6-4. The match lasted well above three hours and it was great. From the start Koepfer played really well, well above his usual level. He was brave and attacked Federer whenever he had the chance. He served better as well and overall had a much better winner to unforced error ratio.
Problem for him was that Federer produced magical moments time and time again winning crucial points. The first set ended in a tiebreak as did the second. Federer played a horrible 2nd set tiebreak which he could have avoided having had a break in hand twice in the set. In the third it was Koepfer who messed up as he had a 2-0 lead early. He held it for a while but Federer fought back to force a tiebreak.
In it he proved better and took a 2-1 lead. When Federer broke Koepfer early in the third it seemed like the match was going towards its conclusion but once again Koepfer came back. At 5-5 in the 4th set Federer produced some magic once more and broke Koepfer to take the 6-5 lead. He then closed it out with 7-5.
It took Roger 3 and a half hours but he is through to the 2nd week of the French Open which is a great result. Good to have him back.
