After a turbulent 2023 and also ditching his long-time coach,
Matteo Berrettini will aim to return in 2024 bigger and better than before with a new coach in tow.
Berrettini will add long-time former coach of Rafael Nadal, Francisco Roig to his stable in 2024, with the duo joining forces ahead of the Italian's comeback.
18 years with Nadal as Berrettini hopes for winning effect
Berrettini's year started with a two-month hiatus after the Australian Open. He then suffered an abdominal injury at the Monte Carlo Masters and had to withdraw from the tournament in the third round. He started to show green shoots performing well at Wimbledon and on his favored grass courts.
But injury again reared its head going into the US Open, this forced him to withdraw from Flushing Meadows as well as the Davis Cup Finals where he was a mere spectator on the sidelines willing his country to eventual glory. However, Berrettini albeit down in the rankings and needing help to get back to his best will start his season at the Brisbane International. He has now also employed Roig after parting ways with long-term coach, Vincenzo Santopadre in October. The new coach will now accompany him to Australia after working alongside Toni Nadal and Carlos Moya with Rafael Nadal for 18 years of success including 22 Grand Slam titles and Berrettini will hope for that similar stardust to come out when they team up after himself leaving a long partnership.
