Frances Tiafoe has undergone surgery on his right hand just days after a painful early exit from the Canadian Open, with the American revealing that doctors discovered and removed a cyst that had been causing problems for some time.
The 28-year-old was forced to retire during his third-round match in Montreal after struggling physically from the beginning of his clash with Arthur Rinderknech. Tiafoe eventually stopped while trailing 6-2, 2-0, leaving the tournament with more questions about his fitness heading into the final stretch of the North American hard-court swing.
Tiafoe had arrived in Canada as the No. 15 seed and opened his campaign with a comeback win over Marin Cilic, recovering from a set down to defeat the veteran 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. However, his next match against Rinderknech quickly became a different story as the American appeared uncomfortable before ultimately deciding he could not continue.
After initially describing the problem simply as a hand injury, Tiafoe has now provided a clearer explanation of what happened and confirmed that he has already undergone a procedure to address the issue.

Tiafoe took to social media to apologize to the Canadian Open fans who had come out to watch him before revealing that the problem had been affecting him for some time.
“Sorry to the fans out here in Montreal who came out to watch me tonight. I've been dealing with a right hand injury for a lil bit now. I tried to play but need the rest. Until next time, thanks for the love,” Tiafoe wrote.

The situation became clearer shortly afterward when the American revealed that he had undergone surgery after doctors identified a cyst in his hand.
“Big S/O to Dr. Michelle Carlson and the @hspecialsurgery team," he added. "They were able to diagnose and take out a cyst that has been causing some issues for some time now. Everything went well and I appreciate all of the messages and support. I'll be back soon,” Tiafoe said.
The timing of the procedure means Tiafoe now faces a race against the clock to be ready for the next major stop on the hard-court swing. The American is scheduled to compete at the Cincinnati Open, which begins on August 13, although his recovery timeline remains unclear.

Tiafoe faces a race against time before Cincinnati
The injury comes during an important stretch of the season for Tiafoe. Earlier in 2026, the American was forced to miss both the Monte-Carlo Masters and Madrid Open because of injury problems, but he returned strongly enough to reach the fourth round of the French Open before winning the Terra Wortmann Open on grass three weeks later.

Tiafoe also reached the Cincinnati final in 2024, the best result of his career at the Masters 1000 event, while last year he reached the round of 16 after defeating Roberto Carballes Baena and Ugo Humbert before losing to Holger Rune.
With Cincinnati followed by the US Open, Tiafoe will have little time to regain his fitness. For now, however, his message suggests the immediate priority is recovery after finally addressing an issue that had been bothering him for some time.
