The
Laver Cup 2024 was inaugurated after the match between
Francisco Cerundolo, representing Team World, and
Casper Ruud, representing Team Europe.
The first point was won by Team World after the Argentinian overcame the Norwegian in a match that was decided in two sets: 4-6, 4-6.
In the first set, Ruud had three break points at 2-1, but the Norwegian could not take advantage of any of them. This motivated Cerúndolo, who when the set went to 3-3 managed to get the first break of the match, and then confirm the break to take a 3-5 lead. With no need to force another break, the Argentine waited patiently on his serve, and after going 40-15 with two set balls, Cerúndolo closed the first set 4-6 in his favor.
In the second set, the story was not going to be too different from what was offered by both players during the first. Although this time Francisco Cerúndolo's first break came in the first game on Casper Ruud's serve. After that, he confirmed the break and kept the advantage until, at 2-4, he gave a new break to his rival that left the match practically sentenced at 2-5 and serving.
Despite Ruud's break for pride that the Norwegian then added, confirming the break and cutting it to 4-5, Cerúndolo was not going to miss his second chance to win, and closed the second set and the match with another 4-6.
Tsitsipas seeks to tie
The next match has started right after the first one, and Stefanos Tsitsipas faces Thanasis Kokkinakis looking for a draw on aggregate, and also as a revenge of the first round duel of the last US Open, where the Australian eliminated the Greek.
