The Austrian coach Gunter Bresnik has worked with some of the most prominent tennis players since the 80s, including Boris Becker, Henri Leconte, Horst Skoff, Patrick McEnroe and Ernests Gulbis.
Still, Bresnik is most famous for his long-term partnership with his compatriot
Dominic Thiem, leading the most prominent Austrian player since Thomas Muster for 18 years. Bresnik worked with Thiem until 2019, making him one of the world's best players and a Major contender. At the end of the previous season, Bresnik joined
Gael Monfils's coaching staff together with Richard Ruckelshausen, who will be France's team captain at the upcoming ATP cup.
Monfils is the top-ranked French player and world no. 11, making a strong start in 2020 before losing ground following the coronavirus outbreak. Monfils lost to Thiem at the Australian Open and won back-to-back titles in Montpellier and Rotterdam. The Frenchman had a massive opportunity to reach another title match in Dubai, dominating world no. 1 Novak Djokovic in the opening set and opening a 6-3 lead in the second set's tie break.
Still, Monfils wasted all three match points and fell in three sets, failing to win a match by the end of the season. Thiem and Monfils will play against each other at the ATP Cup, and it should be interesting to follow that duel because of Gunter Bresnik.
