Coca Gauff was impressive in her Volvo Car Open debut in Charleston winning against Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3 6-0.
Not much needs to be said for the impressive win of Gauff over Pironkova. It took her only 72 minutes to crush a player who is well known as a tough out. Having won the Roland Garros junior event in 2018 the American has a solid clay resume despite this event being her 3rd professional clay event ever.
After the match Gauff said:
"I like sliding, and I’m a pretty good mover on hardcourt, so I think it translates to clay. Especially with the sliding, I feel like I move a little bit quicker on clay, because you don’t have the hard stops, and you’re able to elongate your steps. Clay gives me a little bit more time to prepare my shots, and I don’t feel as rushed on the clay."
The victory was a rather straightforward one especially in the 2nd set but the first set almost went the same route. Gauff was up 4-0 before Pironkova trimmed the lead down to 4-3. Gauff was able to keep her composure winning the next 8 games to win the set and the match.
On that she said:
"I played pretty well, and when it got close in the first set, I was able to control the points, find my calmness, and pull through."
A very impressive win from Gauff who was everywhere on the court and she will look to continue that against Samsonova in the 2nd round.
