Top-seeded American
Taylor Fritz will face one of the biggest challenges of his career on Tuesday at the 2023
US Open, where he'll take on
Novak Djokovic with the goal of finally defeating the three-time champion.
Fritz has faced Djokovic on seven different occasions on the ATP tour, losing all of their previous encounters. The 25-year old has a chance to reach the semifinals in New York for the first time in his career, but will have to play his best tennis to overcome his Serbian opponent.
Fritz would like to finally exorcize his Djokovic demons in front of a home crowd
"Novak’s Novak. It’s tough. I said it on-court, he’s gotten me seven times,” Fritz said. “There’s no one on tour that has any kind of a record like that against me, so I’m hoping one of these times I’ve got to get him. U.S. Open quarters would be a pretty good time to get him.”
The duo last met in the semifinals in Cincinnati last month, with Djokovic securing an easy straight-set victory.
“I’m kind of glad for that because I think that I’ll be in a much better head space approaching this match,” reflected Fritz. “I’ve lost seven times to him. I have nothing to lose. I’m not going to overplay. I’m not going to do anything different because I’m playing Novak. I’m going to play my game, play within myself, and trust that if I play well, that it’s enough.”
