Matteo Berrettini has provided an update on his injury after he was forced to retire from his second-round match at the US Open.

Former world No. 6 Berrettini has had a tough season. An oblique injury saw him withdraw in the middle of the Monte Carlo Masters in April, and he subsequently pulled out of the Madrid Open, Rome Open, and French Open.

However, the Italian appeared to be making a comeback after a good run at Wimbledon. Despite expectations being low due to his only just coming back to form, Berrettini made the fourth round of the grasscourt major, defeating the likes of Alex de Minaur and Alexander Zverev before being beaten by eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.

However, Berrettini faced a heartbreaking setback at the US Open after he sustained an ankle injury during his second-round match against Arthur Rinderknech.

The 27-year-old fell to the floor and let out a cry of pain and frustration as officials rushed to his aid. He was eventually able to stand and shake hands with his opponent and the chair umpire, but had to leave Flushing Meadows in a wheelchair.

Berrettini has now broken his silence on the incident, providing a small update via social media. He revealed that he has been working with medical experts and is currently waiting for scan results in order to decide what to do next. He also added that he would provide another update soon.

"Certainly not the way I hoped my US Open would end. I have been working closely with medical experts since I left the court. We are now waiting for scan results to determine the best next steps. Thank you very much for all the kind messages. I will provide a further update soon," he wrote on Instagram.
