The Greek government reacted negatively to the comments made by Stefanos Tsitsipas regarding the vaccine and COVID-19.
Stefanos Tsitsipas confirmed a few days ago that he did not get vaccinated yet and does not plan to do so unless the ATP mandates its player to do so. Tsitsipas shared his thoughts on the controversial topic saying that he is still young and in his mind people like him would be better off building immunity naturally towards the virus.
The comments were negatively received by the government of Greece who publicly slammed Tsitsipas for them. Government spokesman Giannis Economou said:
“He has neither the knowledge, nor the studies, nor the research work, that would allow him to form an opinion about it. I would say that those who, through their excellent presence and performance in other areas, are also a point of reference for wider social groups, should be doubly careful in expressing such views."
The topic is controversial with many athletes expressing positive and negative views on the vaccine and vaccine in general. An ATP spokesperson confirmed that they respect everyone's right to choose whether to vaccinate or not while also urging players to do so in accordance with scientific data.
