John McEnroe still doubts that
Nick Kyrgios will go all in on being a top tennis professional despite reaching the final of
Wimbledon, though the American legend hopes to eat his words.
The World No.45 was immensely proud of his achievement in reaching the Wimbledon final, becoming the first Australian man to do so since Mark Philippoussis back in 2003.
While Kyrgios feels his Wimbledon run is a reflection of his level being up there with the very best, uncertainty remains as to how committed the 27-year old will be to the tour, with seven-time Grand Slam champion McEnroe among those feeling that way.
“We are all assessing the odds of whether Kyrgios will commit to tennis now and while I have doubts that he will, I’d love to see him do it,” McEnroe said in a recent interview. “He is probably the most talented player the game has seen in the last decade and I like him as a person. I coached him at the Laver Cup four times. He’s a good kid, but he just has to commit to tennis.
“Hopefully he’ll decide that tennis is worth making the commitment for a couple of years. I’m not thinking that it’s likely, but hopefully I’m wrong. I want to be wrong because Nick going all-in with tennis would be incredibly positive for our sport.”
Kyrgios has so far played eight events across the first seven months of the 2022 season, accumulating a win-loss record of 21-7. He reached the quarter-finals of Indian Wells in March, before making it to the semi-finals of Houston on the clay before Stuttgart and Halle on the grass.
Of course, the maverick Aussie then made it to the final of Wimbledon, even taking a set off Novak Djokovic before the 21-time Major champion clinched a seventh crown at SW19 in four sets.
