Former world number one
Andre Agassi has heaped praise on legendary
tennis star
Novak Djokovic for continuously delivering big performances at the highest
level.
The 36-year-old is often regarded as the greatest player in
the history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 24
Grand Slam titles.
Agassi was recently quoted in a report where he heaped
praise on Djokovic and stated that it is nice to see a player who keeps ‘rewriting
records’.
"He keeps rewriting all the records, even his
own," said the eight-time Grand Slam winner about Djokovic. “Here he is,
36, and it looks to me like he’s going on 31. He’ll have a few more years as
well."
Agassi further went on to reveal that he exchanged a few words
with Djokovic and stated that only he can do what he has done in the recent
past.
"Yeah there was a little bit of [an exchange],"
said Agassi. "He hit a return and I was encouraging him to do more of it.
Finally... he needed to be away from me for a few years.
“Sweet words [he said about me]. He’s a good man and it was
nice to see him after the match as well. It’s always a pleasure to watch him at
his craft. Only he can do it the way he does it and it’s a pleasure for all of
us to see it happening. Hopefully he’ll stick around for a while.”
Djokovic started the
Australian Open with a rather hard-fought
win against Croatia’s Dino Prizmic with a score of 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. He will
now face Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in the second round of the competition on Wednesday.
