Milos Raonic started superbly against
Alex de Minaur winning the opening set in a tie-break 8-6 on his return to the
Australian Open, but injury reared its ugly head again for the Canadian who was forced to retire at 7-6, 3-6, 0-2 down to the home hero on Rod Laver Arena.
Raonic had the only break points in the first set, but couldn't use his opportunity. Injury though set in early as he had to request a medical time out. He then returned to the court though and the MTO seemed to work with Raonic saving a break point to win the tie-break 8-6. In the second set though, it seemed that he was struggling further.
His serve in particular was a target with Raonic unable to reel off his usual aces. De Minaur took advantage and broke and held for a 6-3 second set. The home hero started the second set well and broke early on, but this then saw Raonic retire as he couldn't carry on with the physical pain. An unfortunate end again for the Canadian.
“I hope Milos has a speedy recovery. Not great to see him like his. He deserves to be healthy & playing incredible tennis like he’s done for so many years. Hopefully he’s back in no time. I was just chasing his serve for the better part of that match," said De Minaur post match.
