Former
Australian Open finalist, Arnaud Clement, analyzed
Novak Djokovic's current
status and expressed the opinion that he is no longer unbeatable on hardcourt
and in Grand Slams. The former French tennis player commented that players like
Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and
Jannik Sinner could defeat him in the
majors.
Djokovic's
incredible record in Grand Slams during 2023 was 27-1, one of the most
effective in history. The current world No. 1 was crowned champion at the
Australian Open, French Open, and US Open, only falling in the Wimbledon final,
missing a perfect record by one match.
"For
the first time, he looked a little older" – Arnaud Clement.
Being a
virtually unbeatable player in Grand Slams in recent years, Djokovic had 103
wins and only eight losses in the last five seasons, also securing ten Slam
titles in that period. Arnaud Clement commented on 'Nole's' performance in
Melbourne and asserted that, for the first time, he appeared like an older
tennis player.
“We always
wondered who could beat Djokovic on hard and grass. Now a player has just
beaten him three times on hard court,” the 2001 Australian Open runner-up told
L’Equipe. “The vision we have of Djokovic is a little called into question. For
the first time, in Melbourne, we said to ourselves that he looked a little
older than his age (36 years old).”
“It’s clear
that two or three guys who can stand in his way at Grand Slam tournaments
because they are able to stop him in the important moments,” the former world No.
10 added.
“Of course
Djokovic is capable of setting things straight. But, if we take a snapshot of
the end of 2023-beginning of 2024, Sinner beat him in matches that really
matter, whether in the Davis Cup or in Melbourne. Now that he beat him in the
five-set format, he knows he can do it again.”
Clement praises Jannik Sinner
After
Sinner secured his first Grand Slam title at the age of 22, Arnaud Clement
wasn't surprised by the Italian's outstanding performance. He asserted that
Sinner is a player who has reached a new category:
“If there
was a player capable of making a surprise it was him,” he said. “Given his
level in 2023 and his progression, it was clear that he was no longer in the
same category.
“At the end
of the year, he clearly joined the clan of the four, along with Novak Djokovic,
Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev.”
