Tennis journalist Leif Shiras sees a bit of John McEnroe in Nick Kyrgios and he thinks the Aussie player will be back in a grand slam final.
Nick Kyrgios played the best singles grand slam event of his career at Wimbledon reaching the final and losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets. The Australian is enjoying the best year of his career having won the Australian Open doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis as well as playing several semi-finals on the ATP Tour.
It comes after Kyrgios demonstrated an increased level of seriousness about tennis taking his fitness and preparations seriously. It comes after his private life is also blossoming with a new partner to whom he is currently engaged as well.
Noted reporter Leif Shiras shared his thoughts about Kyrgios saying:
"I think he has got the talent to do it. Can he martial all the resources required to win seven three out of five said matches in a full draw, not one that's gutted by withdrawals and players not being allowed to play and that's where it can be a little tough."
He continued:
"I think he can, he reminds me a little bit of john McEnroe back in my era. John was blessed with so much talent. You always wondered though was would his emotions and his temper get in the way and he was able to manage that enough to allow his best tennis to come out and he became one of the game's greats."
He then shared his view that Kyrgios might have another final in him, perhaps in New York:
"I am not sure Nick has that level of achievement in him but I think he has got another slam final maybe in New York on the fast hard courts."
