Canadian hope Denis Shapovalov stumbled in his first test in Toronto losing to Frances Tiafoe rather easily.
The Canadian number one followed compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime in an early exit at their home event disappointing the Canadian crowd greatly. Shapovalov played a terrible match from start to finish losing 1-6 4-6 to Tiafoe who is playing fairly good tennis ever since the grass season.
After the match Shapovalov said:
"It was super tough. My first match here, he played four I think. You could see he was far more comfortable in these conditions. Had I played someone else fresher to these conditions then it would be have been a different story."
Shapovalov was able to hold his own in the 2nd set but at 4-4, he succumbed. Asked what happened he said:
"It was just a tough game. I felt like it was bound to happen sooner than later. I struggled on my serve a lot. Just didn't feel good at all today. I tried to shake things up but it just wasn't working today."
Asked about his mindset for Cincinnati and New York he said:
"I don't think it changes at all. I'm practicing well. You're gonna have days like this in any sport. It's all right. Just get back to the drawing board. Speak to my team, my psychologist about things I could have done differently. Just learn from it."
