Alexander Zverev had to fight hard to stay in the tournament in his second round match at the Australian Open. The match went the full distance with 7:5, 3:6, 4:6, 7:6 (7:5), 7:6 (7:5), 7:6 (10:7) and lasted a total of one and a half hours.
With Klein, Zverev faced the number 163 in the world rankings, but the latter played strongly and gave the German no chance to find his match.
"To be honest, he (Klein) would have deserved to win more today, but that's tennis sometimes," explained Zverev in an interview after his match. "He played incredibly well."
Apparently, Zverev was even thinking about giving up during the match. He probably didn't know what else he could have done to turn the match around. "I didn't know what to do for a long time," admitted Zverev. "I thought: 'There's a Qantas flight at 11:00 a.m. to Dubai and then on home'."
Nevertheless, Zverev was able to turn the corner in the end, turn the match around and finish it off with his first match point. In the third round, the German will face Alex Michelsen. If Zverev manages to win this match on Saturday, he will already be in the last 16 of the Australian Open.
