Willingly or not, Novak Djokovic has made himself as the poster boy of the anti-vaccination movement with his rather staunch stance on not taking the vaccine.
Refusing vaccination is nothing uncommon in this day and age and people who do so are not shy about speaking about it. For many, it's about getting attention but for Djokovic, it's something else. The belief in not taking the vaccine is very strong for him, so much so that he's basically jeopardized his tennis legacy because of it.
He did not play in Australia and he probably won't play at the US Open. These are two events he might have won if he played. Tennis reporter Ben Rothenberg called Djokovic an anti-vaccination poster boy in a recent tweet and Jelena Djokovic, the wife of the tennis superstar took exception to it. She responded in a tweet of her own writing:
"You are creating a very judgmental narrative that fits your agenda. He is simply choosing what’s best for his body. If he is not playing because of making that choice, he is fine with it."
They went back and forth a couple of times with Rothenberg responding:
"I understand that it's his choice, but I also am saying that his decision to be so firmly against the vaccines that it limits his ability to play tournaments has made him, unwittingly or not, into a huge icon of the anti-vax movement. I saw this very clearly during Australia."
