Not how he wanted it to end 🤝 Van de Zandschulp is forced to retire at 4-3 in the @BMWOpen2022 final for @holgerrune2003 to claim his first ATP title!
Holger Rune won the 2022 BMW Munich Open by technically defeating Botic van de Zandschulp in the final as the Dutch player retired leading 4-3 in the first set.
The Dutch player had a tremendous week in Munich taking down some stellar opponents but something serious happened in the final as he was playing rather well. He was up early against Rune who was quite a bit excited, probably too much. He eventually battled back as the Dutch player failed to keep up the high level.
He then took a medical timeout that lasted over 15 minutes which is neither the norm nor normal. He eventually returned playing a few points and retired soon after. He did not stick around during the trophy ceremony and was spotted leaving with ambulance staff. More to follow.
