Wow. Carlos Alcaraz retires in the middle of the 2nd set tiebreak in Bercy. Holger Rune 6-3, 6-6 (3-1) ret. and into his first M1000 semifinal to face Felix Auger-Aliassime. Let's see what this injury means for Alcaraz and the ATP Finals...
Carlos Alcaraz abandoned the match in the second set tiebreak due to an injury that was causing him abdominal pain.
It was unclear what kind of injury Alcaraz sustained but the physio massaged the left abdominal side of Alcaraz in a medical timeout before the tiebreak. After only three points in the tiebreak, Alcaraz signalled that he would be unable to finish the match despite taking pain medication as well.
The match was a really good one and Alcaraz was playing pretty well at the time when he started to experience pain. Rune won the opening set playing far better tennis than Alcaraz but the Spaniard was slowly turning things around.
The problem for Alcaraz is that the ATP Finals are coming up shortly with abdominal injuries notoriously slow healing. Judging by how the match ended, it's not something minor that might endanger his participation in Turin.
